Keswick, Virginia

The acre of land surrounding David’s home and studio in Albemarle County east of Charlottesville is the inspiration for these paintings. The woodshed, the pump house, the flower and vegetable gardens and the tangle that surrounds them on two sides provide year-round subject matter for plein air painting.

Artist’s Statement

When I set up my easel in my yard and begin to paint what I see, I feel part of that tradition that began with the Impressionists. At first I admired Pisarro, copying his painting Orchard with Flowering Fruit Trees, and Monet. Then I learned to appreciate American painters like Homer, Hopper, Wyeth and Burchfield. While I have worked in larger landscapes, these paintings are nature on a smaller scale as it unfolds around me. I find the Virginia light, weather and seasons provide the natural drama.
