David W. Garrison spent his childhood and youth in Dayton, Ohio where his artistic bent led him first to music. He played with an early folk music group and learned flamenco guitar before touring in the Midwest with a cover band. He also was experimenting with drawing and painting and at Ohio University earned a BFA in 1973. In that year he married and moved to Virginia where he has lived since, first in the Shenandoah Valley and currently in the Keswick area outside Charlottesville.

Over the years, the Garrisons have traveled throughout the United States and in Europe, particularly Southern France and Spain. And it is the places where David has lived, worked and traveled that in many ways define his work. His painting and drawings are a tribute to places he has loved and to the light, geography and people that have made them so special.

The places featured on this site range from the out-of-doors just outside his studio, to a summer retreat for Mennonites in the Shenandoah Valley dating from the late 19th century, to the southern coast of Spain near the site of the Battle of Trafalgar. As well, there are places in Northern Spain imagined from his studio as his wife was walking the Camino de Santiago in the summer of 2013.
