Andalucía, Spain
The sun, sea, architecture and history of Spain, especially the southern region of Andalucía, are the inspiration for these paintings. Working from drawings and color studies done on location, David completed these oils in his studio near Shadwell.
Artist’s Statement
My love of Spain goes back to high school when I was conscripted to play guitar for a play. At the same time I first heard the flamenco and classical guitar of Carlos Montoya and Andres Segovia. Something deep moved in me — a deep feeling of sweet melancholy, perhaps. Years later, in 1978, my wife, Mary Jane, and I took a trip for one month (in 1978) to Spain and France. That trip changed my outlook by revealing Spain and France as places of mystery and beauty. By 2008, on another visit to Cádiz Province, I did studies and drawings. When I returned home, I painted from this material for an entire year. It was very good to be in Spain as a painter to feel that history and depth. I tried to open up to show the colors. Hopefully the colors reflect my true feelings about Spain.
